The miners gather towards the end of the day at the Polka Saloon presided over by Minnie, whom they respect, love, and protect. Sheriff Rance breaks up a miner’s fighter and reminds Minnie that he loves her, but she rebuffs him. A Wells Fargo agent, Ashby, enters and announces that he is chasing the bandit Ramerrez and his gang. He shows Rance a warrant for the arrest Ramerrez. A stranger, Dick Johnson, arrives. He and Minnie have met before and she couches for him when Rance and the miners demand to know what he is doing in their camp. When Minnie dances with Johnson, Rance is furious. Johnson is actually Ramerrez but Minnie and the others do not know this. One of the Johnson’s bandits alerts him that they are outside waiting to rob the saloon, but Johnson has fallen for Minnie. She is concerned about the gold that the miners leave with her for safekeeping; Johnson assures her it will be safe.
