The Tales of Hoffmann

Festival Theatre

04 Jul - 11 Jul 2009

The setting is Luther’s Tavern in Nuremberg adjoining an opera house in which Don Giovanni is being performed. The Muse of the poet Hoffmann enlists the help of spirits to keep Hoffmann away from Stella, an opera singer with whom he is infatuated. Then the Muse assumes the guise of Nicklausse, Hoffmann’s friend. Councillor Lindorg, a rival for Stella’s affections, plots to undo Hoffmann. During the interval for Don Giovanni, a crowd of students fills the tavern. They prevail on Hoffmann to sing them the ballad of a grotesque dwarf Kleinzach, in the midst of which he indulges in a reverie about Stella. Lindorg goads Hoffmann, who blames him for his thwarted love affairs. Mellowed by punch, he begins to tell the story of three past loves…

REVIEWS

The opera is a paradise for a set designer, and Roger Kirk’s revolving set and costuming is highly effective
