Share your South Australian story

Have a story that could only happen in South Australia? This is your chance to share it.

State Opera South Australia is inviting people across the state to submit the stories that capture life here, from extraordinary moments to everyday memories. Four selected stories will be turned into original micro-operas and brought to the stage in 2027 by leading Australian composers and librettists.

You do not need to know anything about opera to take part. If you have a family memory, a community story, a moment of local pride or an experience that feels uniquely South Australian, we would love to hear it.

Why take part?

OUR OPERA, OUR STORY celebrates the people, places and moments that make South Australia unique. From migration and family history to food, sport, local pride and unexpected legends, this project is about turning real stories from real people into something unforgettable.

Your story might be funny, moving, surprising or deeply personal, but if it says something about life in South Australia, it belongs here.

If your story is selected

• You will be credited as the original storyteller.
• Your story will be transformed into a new opera by leading Australian creatives.
• You will get exclusive behind-the-scenes rehearsal access
• Your story will be performed on stage in State Opera’s 2027 season.
• You will receive a VIP opening night experience with four tickets.
• You will have the chance to meet the performers bringing your story to life.
• Your story will become part of South Australia’s cultural legacy.

How it works

• Submit your story as written text, audio or video.
• Entries close on 19 June.
• Shortlisted stories will go to a public vote from 24 June to 1 July.
• After the vote, a panel will choose the final stories to become part of State Opera’s 2027 season.

Taking part is simple. You can write your story, record it as audio, or tell it on video — whatever works best for you.
