Garry Stewart

CHOREOGRAPHER,ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Garry Stewart was the Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre for 22 years. He created major works that toured to many of the world’s leading dance venues. His work often involves various technologies including robotics, Virtual Reality, interactive video and 3D stereoscopic graphics. He has also choreographed for Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Royal Flanders Ballet, Ballet du Rhin, Tanz Mainz, Sydney Dance Company and the Australian Ballet, among others. He recently created Elastic Hearts for Queensland Ballet set to an orchestration of the music of Sia, and Terrestrial Fabulation for Theatre national de Chaillot in Paris.

Garry was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship to study leading international choreographic centres and was the inaugural recipient of the Australia Council Award for Outstanding Services to Dance. He has been a jury member for the Rolex Mentorship Programme in Geneva and the Hannover Competition for Choreography. He has created a number of award winning short films and video installations and holds a Masters in Fine Arts (video installation) from the University of New South Wales. He choreographed the TV series Stateless starring and produced by Cate Blanchett as well as Superstars of Dance (NBC TV) in Los Angeles and So You Think You Can Dance (USA). He has been an artist- in-residence at National Institue of Dramatic Art.

Garry was the founding Director of Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts at Flinders University. He currently resides in Paris.
