HENRY PURCELL

Dido and Aeneas

Plant 4 Bowden

02 Oct - 07 Oct 2018

In association with The Elder Conservatorium of Music, The University of Adelaide.

Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, Dido & Aeneas tells the story of the Queen of Carthage and her fateful love for Trojan war hero Aeneas. Their passionate story is chronicled through some of the most exquisite music ever written.

One of the earliest known English language operas, Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas receives a contemporary retelling by Director Nicholas Cannon in this production, in which a war-torn future world is brought to the brink by the consuming love affair between a queen and a hero with no country to call home.

Conducted by Luke Dollman, the cast includes an exciting array of young Australian opera talent and renowned mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Campbell as The Sorceress.

This immersive performance breaks down the traditional separation between audience and performer and invites you to be completely seduced by glorious music.
