Masterclass Series 2025

A wonderful opportunity to peek behind the scenes of an opera performer’s training.

From language coaching to singing and performance, State Opera South Australia’s 2025 Masterclass Series offers a wide range of subjects, harnessing the experience and knowledge of some of the best in the business.

Participants in the tuition-free opportunities are selected from State Opera’s pool of young and emerging artists, who receive coaching and mentoring to assist them in reaching their artistic and professional goals.

All masterclasses will take place at the State Opera Studio, 216 Marion Rd, Netley SA.

CLASSES

ITALIAN RECITATIVE
Sunday 25 May, 1.30pm

Specialist Italian coach Nicole Dorigo, language coach at Opera Australia, works with some lucky young singers on the art of recitative – the “singing of speech” in opera. Nicole will explore the rhythms and cadences of singing in this language, finding colour and natural expression, and the relationship of the Italian language to good singing.

SINGING AND PERFORMANCE
Sunday 6 July, 1.30pm

American-born Tenor Kyle Stegall has quickly built a reputation as one of Australia’s finest tenors. A thoughtful, stylish performer with a deep understanding of vocal technique, Kyle will work with young singers on all aspects of their presentation on stage as their voices develop and they expand their repertoire.

THE ART OF BEL CANTO

Sunday 17 August, 1.30pm

Australian soprano Helena Dix has a blooming career, having performed major roles at The Metropolitan Opera, New York; La Monnaie, Brussels; Seattle and around the world. Renowned for her vocal prowess in roles from the bel canto repertoire, Helena will work with young singers to deepen their understanding of the style and expectations of this unique Italian artform.
