Dear Friends and Supporters of State Opera

In light of the Federal and State Government directives regarding COVID-19 and the gathering of crowds, State Opera wishes to advise that the performance of Carmina Burana at Memorial Drive on Friday 27 March and the May season of The Barber of Seville at Festival Theatre are suspended.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our audiences, artists and staff is our highest priority, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely and act in accordance with formal advice. We will provide updates in the coming days on the situation and any additional performances that may also be impacted.

Presenting exceptional opera to South Australians is our passion and purpose. We are obviously disappointed to be unable to share with you what we know are remarkable performances of much-loved works.

We recognise that these are extraordinary times and that community wellbeing is paramount. As a flagship arts organisation, we do not take the decision to cancel a performance lightly. We are committed to supporting the talented singers, artists and creatives who reside at the core of this company and assure you that these wonderful people will be on our stages and in our productions as soon as possible. We know we can count on our audiences, partners and broader community to support each other at this time.

In the short term, we plan to focus our efforts in the coming months on engagement with music teachers via the much-anticipated Confident Conductor Program, the exciting new development of When The Rain Stops Falling – The Opera, and the annual Opera Winter School.

In accordance with the rights of ticket holders under the Live Performance Award, all patrons of Carmina Burana and The Barber of Seville are eligible for a full refund via ticketing partner BASS. All refunds will be automatic and issued within 14 business days of event cancellation.
Enquiries should be directed to [email protected] or 131 246.

We look forward to seeing you in the foyers and at the performances when we are back in showbusiness!

Best wishes,
Yarmila and Stuart
