Sarah Giles

DIRECTOR
Sarah Giles is an award-winning opera and theatre director, with opera credits including the world premiere of Lorelei (Victorian Opera); O Mensch!, György Kurtág’s…pas àpas – nulle part…and George Benjamin’s Into the Little Hill (all for Sydney Chamber Opera and Sydney Festival); as well as Kreutzer vs Kreutzer, a concert featuring music by Janáček and Beethoven (Australian Chamber Orchestra).
She has directed for companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of South Australia, Griffin Theatre Company, NIDA, WAAPA, La Mama, the Old Fitz Theatre, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Victorian Opera and Opera Queensland. In 2011 Sarah was the Richard Wherrett Fellow at Sydney Theatre Company and was subsequently their Resident Director in 2013. In 2013 she was also awarded a Mike Walsh and a Glorias Fellowship. In 2009 Sarah was the Affiliate Director in Residence at Griffin Theatre in Sydney. 
 
She has received Helpmann and Green Room award nominations for Best Director of an Opera for Lorelei, which was nominated in five categories and won Best New Australian Work and Best Design at the Green Room Awards. Lorelei was later remounted at Victorian Opera and toured to Opera Queensland. She also won Best Direction of an Independent Production for The Ugly One with Griffin Theatre Company at the Sydney Theatre Awards. 
 
A Directing graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sarah Giles also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Melbourne with a double major in History and Italian.
