Fellowship Recipient Announced

The Helpmann Academy, in partnership with State Theatre Company South Australia (STCSA) and State Opera South Australia (State Opera) is thrilled to announce Clara Solly-Slade as the recipient of the Helpmann Academy Emerging Director Fellowship, valued at over $30,000.

“The Helpmann Academy Emerging Director Fellowship is a rare opportunity to cultivate the next generation of storytellers through hands on experience with two of South Australia’s most prominent cultural institutions. Clara is an exciting emerging voice in the theatre scene and we can’t wait to see what this experience will inspire in her.”

The first of its kind in the country, the unique program will see Clara take on a year-long paid internship with both the State Theatre Company and State Opera – working alongside artistic directors Geordie Brookman (STCSA), Stuart Maunder AM (State Opera) and a host of guest directors from January 2019.

Clara is an emerging actor and director, who graduated from the Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE) in 2013 with an Advanced Diploma in Creative Arts – Acting. In 2017 Clara received the Helpmann Academy/Independent Arts Foundation Neil Curnow Award to travel to the USA and undertake three, month-long placements with three arts organisations; Working Classroom, The H.E.A.T Collective and La Mama.

Clara said she is ready to sink her teeth into this new opportunity and is excited to see how the fellowship will extend her directing abilities.

“I am so blown away that I was selected for this opportunity and cannot wait to get into it at the end of January. The Helpmann Academy have provided me with artistic opportunities that have not only deepened my own personal artistic methodologies but profoundly changed my understanding and belief in the arts as a tool for social and political change. Receiving the Helpmann Academy Emerging Director Fellowship this year will be an opportunity unlike any other to work long term within two of Australia’s top performing arts companies.”

Helpmann Academy CEO, Jane MacFarlane said this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to engage with two of South Australia’s top storytellers.
