It’s been a very busy few months here at State Opera with a number of Opera Studio performances being presented in the intimate setting of the Madrigal Room. In late June, LOVE, SEX & DEATH enjoyed three almost sold out performances and brought a new vision to some of the well-known classics.

“…six of Adelaide’s wonderful singers, a marvellous small orchestra under Dale Ringland’s leadership, music, dance, and theatre, a well-designed venue, hiding the open starkness of the Opera Studio, great costumes, a few good wines to choose from at the bar, nibbles provided, and a good time to be had by all. What more could one want?”

Barry Lenny, Broadway World.

Following this twist on the traditional, SOSA and Pelican Productions then presented IN THE DOME ROOM AT 2 O’CLOCK. This was the second outing of this offering from playwright Rob George and composer Dale Ringland and also enjoyed sold-out performances.

“The director/choreographer team of Greg and Kerry Elliot have done a splendid job with the staging, and the show is funny, elegant, engaging, all the things an operetta should be.”

Ewart Shaw, The Advertiser

Looking forward, we have a number of fabulous productions coming up: La Vida Breve/Gianni Schicchi at the Adelaide Town Hall this week; Don Pasquale in the Opera Studio on 5, 6, & 7 October; Die Fledermaus at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 24 & 25 October, and, finally, the fabulous Verdi Spectacular at the Adelaide Town Hall on 21 & 22 November. More on these productions in this newsletter.

Next year, I’m delighted to advise we will return to Festival Theatre for three mainstage productions plus a brilliant Adelaide Festival offering – HAMLET. Subscribers should have received the offer of discount tickets and a priority booking period to secure tickets to this spectacular production of HAMLET. Tickets go on sale to the general public on 31 August. Bookings: BASS on 131 246 or bass.net.au.

As you may be aware, SOSA has recently undergone an examination of its management model and the SOSA Board will shortly consider the recommendations. I anticipate that before the end of the year, the new management structure will be in place in readiness for what is shaping up to be a very busy 2018 and 2019 season.

I’m excited about the future of State Opera and hope you can join us on the journey.

I look forward to seeing you at the theatre soon.
