Rossini’s La Cenerentola offers an exhilarating retelling of the timeless Cinderella story, replacing fairy-tale magic with dazzling vocal performances, spirited comedy and musical brilliance through his exquisite score.

This enchanting opera celebrates kindness, resilience, and the transformative power of love. An invitation to the Prince Ramiro’s Ball sets the stage for a night of surprises. Angelina (our Cinderella) a gentle and gracious young woman, is abused and mistrusted by her vain stepsisters and pompous father, Don Magnifico. Yet her quiet strength and compassion shine through, capturing the heart of the Prince – not through enchantment, but through strength of character.

Neil Armfield directs, with a career spanning several decades across theatre, film and opera and numerous acclaimed productions, and together with Designer Stephen Curtis brings a retro 70’s twist to the production. Stuart Stratford, Music Director of Scottish Opera conducts.

State Opera’s world premiere of La Cenerentola stars audience favourite Anna Dowsley as Angelina (Cinderella), Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Don Magnifico and Helena Dix as Clorinda, alongside South Australians, Nicholas Lester and Pelham Andrews and other outstanding local artists from State Opera South Australia.
